Here is a simple guide on how to report that you will be sick or late for your shift:
Who to Contact: Our CBA states that you must advise your Supervisor directly; and,
The Company requires you to inform IOC Call Centre @ 709-944-8400 ext 634662
How to Contact: You can speak to them directly or leave a voicemail.
When to Contact: You must do this at least one (1) hour before your shift is scheduled to begin. This is so the company can arrange for a replacement.
If you are sick for a longer period:
If you are absent for more than three days due to sickness, you must present a medical certificate when you return to work.
*It is very important to follow this procedure. An employee who is absent for three consecutive scheduled shifts without giving notice can be terminated.
The Medical Transportation Assistance Program (MTAP) is a program designed to help pay for some of your travel expenses when you need to access specialized medical services that are not available in your home community. It is considered the "payer of last resort," meaning you should check with any private insurance provider you may have first.
Here is a simple breakdown of how it works:
Eligible Medical Trips: MTAP assists with travel for specialist visits, chemotherapy, dialysis, radiation treatments, MRIs, PET scans, and nuclear medicine tests.
Eligible Expenses: The program helps cover a portion of costs for:
Economy airfare
Private vehicle use (at a rate of 25¢/km for trips over 500 km)
Accommodations and meals
Ground transportation like taxis, buses, or ferries
MTAP does not cover travel for emergency room visits, to get a second opinion, to avoid local wait times, or for experimental treatments or services not insured by MCP.
Get the Necessary Paperwork:
If traveling out of the province, you need a referral from a specialist in Newfoundland and Labrador.
If you need a non-medical escort to travel with you, you must get a medical note from your doctor explaining why it's necessary.
Apply in Advance for Flights:
MTAP offers a flight prepayment option to help with upfront costs.
You must submit an application with your appointment confirmation and any required notes at least two business days before in-province travel or seven business days for out-of-province travel.
Attend Your Appointment:
While at your appointment, make sure to get a signed confirmation of attendance record. This is crucial for your claim.
Submit Your Claim for Reimbursement:
After your trip, fill out a claim form and submit it along with your confirmation of attendance and official receipts for expenses like accommodations.
Claims and all required documents can be emailed directly to MTAP@gov.nl.ca.
